Chapter 321: Telling the Whole Truth

After returning to the hotel, the first thing Liu Man did was to find Yu Zhan in his room.

As Yu Zhan opened the door, he looked at her unduly reticently. He did not say anything and opened the door to let her in. He must have drunk coffee just now, for an aroma of coffee had not yet dissipated in the room.

Liu Man turned around to face the man walking towards her and introduced herself as if it were the first time they were meeting,

“My name is Liu Man.”

Yu Zhan said, “Mhm.” He knew very well that this Liu Man was not the other one, “Sit down before you talk,” He let Liu Man sit on his bed while he sat on a chair in a listening posture.

“My mother isn’t Zhang Pei, but an unknown ge ji in the Han Dynasty surnamed Zhao. My father was Liu Kan, Emperor Ping of the Han Dynasty. Other people hated my mother and her sister for being overly favored, and both were demoted to the cold palace. She was already pregnant then, and conditions in the cold palace were difficult. She died while giving birth to me, so I was raised by my aunt and Madam Xu. Madam Xu was initially a high-ranking concubine who entered the cold palace because of her father. Madam Xu taught me calligraphy and how to play the Guqin…”

TL’s Note: Ge ji was a name used for beauties, mostly servants, who entertain and sing.

“I was seventeen when my aunt caught a cold. Because there was no medication available, the minor illness eventually turned into a lung disease and caused her to pass away.”

“Madam Xu passed away after three years, too. She was originally a pampered young lady from a well-off family and the most talented woman in the world, but she spent twenty arduous years in the cold palace. She became ill from overwork and died of depression.”

“I lived alone for four years. Perhaps seeing my loneliness, the servants despised me more and more. The night before I came to this world was coincidentally Laba. The palace held a banquet, and cheering and laughter were everywhere. Only the cold palace was dead silent. I was so cold that I lost consciousness, and at that time, I thought it would be nice to die so I could reunite with my loved ones. I didn’t expect that when I opened my eyes again, I would turn into this modern girl with the same name.”

TL’s Note: Laba is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the beginning of the Chinese New Year period.

“This is my story.”

Liu Man told the whole truth about her background in an understating tone. If he had not seen her childhood living environment with his own eyes, Yu Zhan would have thought she was telling the plot of a TV series. He could never understand the resentment she felt when she sent Little Zhao away and the sadness when she accompanied Madam Xu in her dying moments. Neither could he ever imagine how she survived the last four years alone in the cold palace.

All Yu Zhan’s self-blame and regret turned into a sigh, “I should have brought you with me back then.”

Liu Man smiled and shook her head,

“If I had left with you, who would attend to my aunt and Madam Xu when they passed away? Besides, I lived a happy life when they were alive.”

Yu Zhan stepped forward and took her in his arms, feeling distressed and embracing her tightly, “I finally understand why you try to be so strong.”

“Not strong enough to survive in the cold palace. Many people die after coming in before living past their first year. They commit suicide, die of illness, get murdered… I heard that when I was just born, the emperor planned to poison me. Later, the queen persuaded him to let me stay in the cold palace to fend for myself. How lucky I was to live to be 24 years old.”

Yu Zhan recalled the leader he had seen meeting with ministers in the main hall. He could not comment on Liu Man’s biological father. The nature of “being a poisonous tiger but not eating its own child” did not exist in the royal family.

TL’s Note: “A poisonous tiger not eating its own child” is an idiom that indicates even villains would not kill their children.

“Have you realized? I am the same age as you,” Liu Man, in Yu Zhan’s arms, raised her head to look at him. She blinked and smiled.

Yu Zhan stared into her eyes. These big eyes aligned with modern people’s aesthetics but were completely different from the little girl’s upslanting eyes, “What did you look like when you grew up?”

“Not prettier than this Liu Man,” She said honestly, “Compared with her, I’m a servant, and she seems more like a princess.”

Liu Man could not help but laugh, “Silly girl, some things are more noble than appearance. If this Liu Man was so good, why was she unknown to people before you came, failing countless academic exams and not having many friends? You’re useless if you only have good looks.”

“Honestly, she is much stronger than I. She ascended to the position of queen using my body, and the difficulties and obstacles she encountered were much greater than mine. I admire her very much. Maybe her personality suits my era better.”

Liu Man also told Yu Zhan about what Zhang Pei dreamed of.

As she mentioned the body’s original owner, Liu Man suddenly recalled something and clarified, “Oh, right. I said before that I had a crush on Tang Tu, but truthfully, this Liu Man liked him, but I didn’t. I had never come into contact with men, so who could I have a crush on? You are the first person I have ever liked…”

He stroked her long hair and said, “I disagree with what you just said. Not only am I the first person you’ve liked, but I’m also the first man you were in contact with.”

“But I’ve always thought you are a ‘eunuch.’”

Yu Zhan: “…”

“Looks like I haven’t made you understand what it means to be a real man yet.”

“No, no, no,” Liu Man hurriedly buried her head into his arms, afraid that he would kiss her again, “I was young then, and twenty years have passed, so I’ve long forgotten what you look like. Besides, how could a man openly appear in the imperial harem? You are probably the only person in history who has wandered around in the imperial palace in pajamas and slippers.”

TL’s Note: See the Author’s Note at the bottom of this chapter.

“If I had only brought my phone to take photos, film videos, and upload them to the internet, I would certainly become famous.”

Liu Man burst into laughter.

Yu Zhan pinched her blushing cheeks, “I’m regretting not taking pictures of what you looked like when you were little.”

“I don’t remember it myself.”

“I still remember it; it’s fresh in my mind.”

Yu Zhan thought he must have been the only person in this world to know Liu Man’s true appearance as a child.

Author’s Note: Here is the third update today! ML and FL initially had their first kiss in this chapter, but this has been modified. It’s just a tiny change and will not affect the plot.

TL’s Note: Dang it. My guess is that the kiss happened right after Liu Man told Yu Zhan that he was the first man she liked. ;-;

Chapter 320: Deleting the Video

Meanwhile, another client defended Yu Zhan after seeing his incident on Weibo. He was the owner of Da Huang, Mr. Hong.

Mr. Hong personally posted on Weibo, “I am the owner of the dog that was in the car accident in Vet’s Cuties 1. Da Huang has been cured. We received the dog wheelchair from the manufacturer last week, and Da Huang is adapting to walking with the wheelchair now.”

“My salary for August arrived today, and I immediately transferred the cost of the dog wheelchair to Doctor Yu via PayPal. The total amount is 4,100 yuan. Although it is more than half my salary, I must return this money to Doctor Yu. He only charged me 1,500 for Da Huang’s surgery and has no obligation to help me pay for the dog wheelchair. I can’t take advantage of him anymore!”

At the same time, he sent a video. In the video, Da Huang, who had lost both his hindlegs, had his lower body propped on a metal wheelchair with two wheels and was moving forward step by step. He often turned his head to look at his “new legs,” his look was curious and silly.

The video extensively moved the netizens.

“I’m getting old and cry easily.”

“When Da Huang adjusts to this wheelchair, he can continue running like a healthy dog. I hope the blogger will continue sending updated videos of Da Huang.”

“I feel very grateful to Doctor Yu. He’s the savior of these small animals.”

“The blogger is a good person for knowing to show gratitude.”

Yu Zhan returned to the hotel room, turned on his phone, and saw three transfer notifications from PayPal. This was a “windfall.” At the same time, there were a few missed calls from the water army’s boss, and he called them back.

The boss of the water army told him that they discovered something interesting.

One of the four vets who came to cause trouble in Yu Zhan’s clinic appeared before the camera in The Vet’s Loving Pets. Because Yu Zhan never picked up, the boss of the water army sent the screenshot of the video the subordinates collected to his mailbox.

He opened it and could recognize at first glance that this vet was the short-haired man, Du Jie.

The water army boss asked Yu Zhan whether they should publicize this information extensively.

Yu Zhan said without hesitation, “Do it!”

It could be said that waves never stopped coming. One second, everyone was moved to tears by Da Huang’s persistence, and the next second, the internet disclosed that Doctor Du, who showed great care for small animals in The Vet’s Loving Pets, was one of the leaders of the chaos at Yu Zhan’s pet hospital. The whistleblower magnified Du Jie’s face in the video and surveillance screenshots, hanging it online as if it were a wanted criminal’s photo without blurring it out.

“Can’t believe I was most impressed by Doctor Du when I watched The Vet’s Loving Pets and felt he’s a good vet. It turns out he was merely acting.”

“I watched the publicized clinic’s surveillance video again. At that time, Doctor Du rushed to the front and even seemed to have pushed our sister nurse, who was trying to stop him. His face was so ugly!”

“It’s too ironic. This kind of person does not deserve to be a vet!”

“Everyone who was rioting in Doctor Yu’s hospital is abominable. I hope the law will punish these people.”

“I think everyone should be more rational this time. We should analyze why this person wanted to cause trouble.”

“Probably got jealous after seeing Doctor Yu’s popularity.”

“Their behavior seems more like a malicious attack in business competition. This Du Jie happens to be a vet employed by Fuxin Pet Hospital. I believe there should be someone behind the scenes.”

Yu Zhan’s water army found the right timing to release the personal information of Fuxin Pet Hospital’s director. He was an outstanding entrepreneur and the Capital Veterinary Federation’s president.”

Combined with the high fee mentioned by the rich lady, the netizens could easily deduce the cause and effect.

“I understand it now. Doctor Yu should not have publicized the cost of treatment in the documentary. His pricing is far lower than the industry’s average, which has offended the veterinarian magnates!”

“I run a business. Based on my experience, no matter what industry you are in, if you do this, you will antagonize your peers.”

“But his charging is reasonable.”

“There’s nothing you can do about it. Someone who has entered the industry early would have a high status and authority in the industry already, which is enough to make rules according to their own style. If the latecomer doesn’t obey, they will be suppressed and driven away.”

“That’s right. Many say Fuxin Pet Hospital is bad, but it has the highest ratings on Yelp. They spammed good reviews and deleted all the negative ones, which is enough to show the issues in their boss’ character.”

“I have been raising pets for more than twenty years and visited this hospital ten years ago. Truthfully, it was pretty good at the beginning, and its charges were much lower than other pet hospitals back then. It beat several aristocratic hospitals in a short time. Later, I guess their business was so good that their prices increased year by year. Now, it has become the most high-end pet hospital in the capital. I can’t afford their expenses and am too scared to go there anymore.

“Haha, what’s the difference between this boss and the aristocratic hospitals’ leaders back then?”

“Those aristocratic hospitals’ boss didn’t play dirty tricks to deal with him.”

“In Vet’s Cuties, the sign of Doctor Yu’s pet clinic was mosaicked for fear that others would know about it. If it weren’t for malicious doxing, we still wouldn’t know where Doctor Yu works. In sharp contrast, The Vet’s Loving Pets could not wait to tell everyone that it was filmed at Fuxin Pet Hospital from the very beginning. I don’t know how much advertising money the boss paid the director.”

The more the netizens talked, the more indignant they became. Of course, the water army hired by Yu Zhan was also responsible for this. Everyone began to boycott watching The Vet’s Loving Pets and bringing their pets to Fuxin Pet Hospital for treatment.

Surprisingly, less than five minutes after this slogan was shouted, the video of The Vet’s Loving Pets was removed from the internet by the National Channel. Not only was it gone on the official website, but it disappeared on other video websites. Within the blink of an eye, it had been completely deleted.

Ye Ziliang, who stayed home to help Yu Zhan and Liu Man care for their cats and dog and could not go anywhere, was even more confused because he suddenly received a call from the department head of the National Channel’s Documentary Department. Said superior of his former superior’s superior personally apologized to him and proactively admitted that he had made a mistake, saying that he should not have deprived Ye Ziliang of his qualification as the director of Vet’s Cuties nor steal his idea to film The Vet’s Loving Pets. He also said that the National Channel had already canceled the work plan of The Vet’s Loving Pets.

What surprised Ye Ziliang the most was that the department head asked him whether he wanted to return to work at the National Channel. They had a great job opening.

Ye Ziliang declined without hesitation and said, “Working inside the system does not suit me. Too many rules and frames constrain me, and I’m great as a freelancer right now. Thank you for the offer.”

He declined so straightforwardly, but the department head supplicated him to reconsider.

Ye Ziliang felt surprised. Which God took action to make the leaders of the National Channel obedient?

Chapter 319: Transferring Money in a Red Packet

Deputy Minister Guo never expected to hear this young lady say his son’s name. Judging from her expression, she must not be a friend of Guo Nan.

“Yes, his name is Guo Nan.”

Liu Man nodded and said, “Thank you.”

Then, there was nothing more; she responded not to Deputy Minister Guo’s invitation to make a documentary just now.

The other calligraphers all looked toward Su Yi with a hint of teasing, as if saying, “Your apprentice is impressive, even dismissing the invitation from the Deputy Minister of Culture.”

Su Yi had already understood the situation. Deputy Minister Guo’s son was the mastermind behind the chaos at Yu Zhan’s pet clinic. It was a helpless coincidence.

Not to mention Liu Man’s unwillingness, neither was he willing to cooperate with someone who had no capability and played tricks on competitors!

“Liu Man is an internet live-streamer, and soon she will return to school. She has to work when not studying and doesn’t have much free time.”

Su Yi was better off not trying to smooth things over. Now, Deputy Minister Guo could tell that Su Yi was also disgusted by him—no, probably his son.

After the lunch party ended, Deputy Minister Guo returned to the hotel and asked his secretary to find out what Guo Nan had done recently to antagonize Su Yi and his apprentice. The secretary did not even have to deliberately investigate, for they could see everything as soon as they logged online.

Deputy Minister Guo finally learned that his son recently filmed a documentary about medical care for pets. He, rarely paying attention to Weibo, read about the entire incident from beginning to end.

He was wrathful!

He immediately called the director of the National Channel.

Liu Man, who had not brought her phone, did not know that the netizens watched several dramas one after another today and had satisfied their addiction to gossip.

Early in the morning, Tao Zhiyao was the first to post a Weibo, “Someone started spreading the rumor online that I’m Princess Man and Doctor Yu’s paid actress. They say I intentionally bought a sick cat for the documentary’s effect. They say I was acting to be worried about the cat, and I was doing whatever it takes to be famous. Oh, right. They also say I’m a fake Bai Fu Mei and that it’s a made-up persona. Whose fault is it for my Weibo to be too low-profile? OK, I will now show off my wealth.”

Then, Tao Zhiyao posted ten consecutive Weibo posts, showing off her dazzling array of branded bags, her piles of high-end cosmetics, the clothes that would never run out even if she wore a different set every day, the various luxury cars parked in her garage, and her extra-large garden…

To guarantee she took the photo and did not steal it from the internet, within the frame of every photo was a piece of white paper, which read: “I’m Peach, and I’m here to show off my wealth.”

Such a simple and crude way of showing off wealth amazed the onlookers.

“Oh, God. My eyes have been dazzled.”

“I have krypton-gold dog eyes, which have been dazzled, too!”

“Sister with a tremendously rich temperament, I’ve been your fan from beginning to end and have never doubted you. Please be my sugar mommy!”

“I realize that the richer a person is, the less they enjoy showing off these things. I underestimated Sis Peach before. You’re not a Bai Fu Mei but the young miss of a truly wealthy family.”

“How come those haters who scolded Sis Peach yesterday don’t dare to say a thing now?”

“They’re afraid of offending the powerful.”

“Blogger is so rich that she does not need to act and purchase a sick cat to become famous. I feel like she filmed these videos purely as a hobby, and the content in the documentary should be real.”

Many people on the internet liked watching socialites show off their wealth because the luxurious life of socialites was something they could not enjoy even if they worked hard in this life.

Tao Zhiyao’s high-profile actions brought attention to her Weibo at an unprecedented level. Many people sent her private messages, claiming they wanted to be friends with her.

Tao Zhiyao felt ironic and turned off her private messaging function.

After learning that people caused trouble at Yu Zhan’s pet clinic, she tossed and turned all night. This morning, she transferred a red packet worth 20,000 yuan to Yu Zhan’s PayPal.

She did not know how else she could help Yu Zhan except by giving him money, although she knew very clearly that Yu Zhan did not need money. He was much wealthier than she was.

Attached to the 20,000 yuan transfer was a note she wrote: Payment for saving Pear’s life.

The second plot twist came from the rich lady. Yes, the owner of the Ragdoll.

People interested in this matter discovered that she silently wrote a new review for Yu Zhan’s pet clinic on Yelp, “From the environment to the service, I give this hospital five stars for every category. Before writing a specific review, I will first apologize to Doctor Yu. At that time, I was too worried about the condition of my Milk Tea (Ragdoll Cat), so I spoke a little fiercely and accidentally offended Doctor Yu. I have deeply realized my mistake and feel very sorry.

Doctor Yu’s medical skills are great; there’s no doubt of that. Milk Tea indeed only had a slight accumulation of food because I fed him too much. However, I was so angry then that I couldn’t listen to what he said. On the same day, I took Milk Tea to another well-known chain pet hospital and spent 1,450 yuan for an examination. The final diagnosis was also mild accumulation of food, but the medicine prescribed by the vet at that pet hospital was no different from the medicine I bought from Doctor Yu, except the price was twice as expensive.

Two days later, Milk Tea’s illness was cured. I regretted not listening to Doctor Yu’s advice, spending nearly 2,000 yuan more, and having Milk Tea suffer through two examinations. The more I thought about it, the more I couldn’t let it go. I have re-transferred the 270 yuan treatment fee that Doctor Yu refunded me to his PayPal.

Finally, I would like to say that this pet hospital is really reliable. The doctor and nurse have a great service attitude, and their charges are very reasonable. I highly recommend it!”

The rich lady attached five photos to the comment. The first three photos were cute photos of the Ragdoll, and the fourth was a photo of the receipt that read: examination fee 1,450 yuan, the hospital where the fee was charged: Fuxin Pet Hospital XX Branch. The fifth photo was a screenshot of a PayPal transfer, which read clearly: 270 yuan transferred to *Zhan.

The rich lady commented at around 11 o’clock last night. She probably wrote this long review because her conscience was disturbed after seeing the news tag placed number one on the hotsearch leaderboard.

Until this morning, someone unintentionally saw her comment on Yelp, quickly screenshotted and saved it, and posted it on Weibo. This Weibo post quickly aroused strong reactions among the netizens.

First, the rich lady’s comment was reasonable and evidence-backed, making it realistic. She and Tao Zhiyao proved simultaneously that Yu Zhan did not stage anything in Vet’s Cuties 2.

Second, the rich lady mentioned another pet hospital that charged expensively, and this hospital was coincidentally where The Vet’s Loving Pets was filmed.

The rich lady’s bravery in telling the truth made more pet-owning netizens come forward. They said on Weibo that they had suffered losses at this pet hospital and spent lots of unjustified money. They even wrote negative Yelp reviews about Fuxin Pet Hospital, but they were deleted instantly.

The netizens immediately opened Yelp and realized Fuxin Pet Hospital had a very high rating, close to full marks, and every review in the comment section was positive.

Chapter 318: Attending the Lunch Party

After hearing Su Yi’s words, Liu Man’s eyes fell on Yu Zhan, who stood behind him and looked at her intently.

Yu Zhan’s emotions had already calmed. He could be sure now that the dream he thought was a hallucination was real; the little girl was Liu Man!

Since he could see Weiyang Palace from two thousand years ago, Liu Man could come to the future after two thousand years. It was not a contradiction.

Although he had a mind full of questions, it was not a good place to share secrets with many people coming and going, so he said nothing and acted as usual.

Liu Man did not look strange on the surface and smiled as she asked him, “Are you satisfied with my performance today?”

“It has surpassed my imagination.”

Yu Zhan was saying his true inner thoughts. It was the first time he watched Liu Man create live. He witnessed Liu Man turning an ordinary table into a work of art, which felt completely different from watching Liu Man stream her calligraphy.

It was lunchtime, and the trio prepared to leave before a civil servant stopped them, saying that Deputy Minister Guo and the mayor were inviting Su Yi and his apprentice to lunch.

Of course, they could not refuse the upper management’s lunch, so Liu Man had to separate from Yu Zhan. She promised to meet him at the hotel and set off to attend the rendezvous with Su Yi.

Yu Zhan stayed at the Exhibition Center. He wanted to examine Liu Man’s “Innocence”; it would be best if he could purchase it.

The staff were taking off each author’s work. One person’s actions were slightly rough, and the other reprimanded, “Be careful. Maybe the work in your hands will be priceless in the future.”

The duo was preparing to move Liu Man’s table.

“Where are we moving the table to? There’s nowhere in the exhibition hall to exhibit it.”

“Let’s ask the upper management.”

“There’s no one left. They’ve all gone to attend lunch.”

Yu Zhan walked over and asked them, “I want to purchase this table. How does the trade work?”

The staff said, “You may not be able to buy it. After all the works are displayed for one week, some will be selected for permanent collection by museums or art galleries in many places, and some will be reserved by collectors and investors in advance.”

“Then, I’ll reserve this table right now.”

“Eh…”

The staff exchanged glances, “We can’t make the decision. What if you return tomorrow and ask the curator?”

After coordination, Liu Man’s table was displayed in the center of the outer exhibition hall.

The stream on TV ended after Zhou Budai received his award. The audience could not suppress their excitement after watching the live stream, and those who lived close directly arrived at the scene to tour the exhibition; therefore, a long line formed again outside of the Exhibition Center.

Any visiting tourists could see the prominent table at first glance. Many people surrounded the table; some were taking photos, some were looking at Liu Man’s drawing, and some were studying her essay. Although Liu Man placed fifth, his fame was undoubtedly in the first place.

Two literati discussed, “As I read this short writing carefully, I constantly feel like it’s hiding a person. Look at the ending where the girl says to ‘never forget.’ Who can she never forget?”

“Maybe a relative of hers.”

Yu Zhan, who was beside them, heard the conversation.

He had been studying the writing since the table was moved here. Even after listening to the judges’ explanation, he still could not understand some details. His ancient Chinese reading skills were too weak, and he was at about the same level as those netizens who claimed to be illiterate.

After hearing the literati scrutinize each character seriously, he felt “Innocence” was written for him.

Liu Man wanted to tell him that this was her story.

She never forgot the “eunuch” that had helped her.

Meanwhile, Liu Man had already arrived at the hotel hosting the lunch party. It was a very formal occasion, with four tables in total. All ten judges and top ten authors arrived at the scene, along with government officials and members of the Calligraphy Association.

Liu Man sat at the same table with other authors. She was next to Zhou Budai, who looked especially happy. He whispered in Liu Man’s ear, “Minister Guo plans to take my ‘Western Regions’ back to the capital and hang it in the Banqueting House. When leaders meet with foreign guests in the future, especially those from countries along the ‘Silk Road,’ they will use my work to demonstrate the ancient history of diplomatic relations and promote the country’s calligraphy culture.”

Zhou Budai was scared that other authors would hear him, so he kept his voice very low, but he could not hide the pride in his countenance.

To any calligraphers in the today, this was a great honor. Liu Man felt sincerely happy for him, “It seems that it won’t be long before I call you Master Zhou.”

Zhou Budai knew she was teasing him about how he called Professor Su “Master Su” when they first met, “Actually, you are more skilled than I am, but you didn’t choose the right theme. If you write an essay about themes such as ‘feudal lords vying for the throne,’ your work can also be exhibited in the Banqueting House.”

Liu Man shook her head sincerely, “I can’t write it. I don’t have that kind of mind or vision; I can’t be a queen.”

With a “pff,” Zhou Budai burst into laughter, attracting the side glances of people at their table, “I didn’t say you need to be a queen. Besides, you only need to read more historical books to write these things. You girls are just too emotional.”

Liu Man declined to comment.

The magnates at the main table did not exchange many toasts; the meal was merely a high-end casual meal, and the entire atmosphere was harmonious and peaceful.

Deputy Minister Guo relaxed his dignified persona and talked about calligraphy and other traditional cultures with the calligraphers. Liu Man did not listen until he said,

“While coming to Gudu and observing this calligraphy exhibition, I saw many exquisite calligraphy works and met all of you outstanding calligraphers. I feel deeply touched. My son works in the documentary department of the National Channel and is a documentary director. I plan to have him make a calligraphy-related documentary, and my main purpose is to promote calligraphy skills to young people. I hope to get your cooperation.”

Liu Man heard it and immediately thought of Guo Nan, who was coincidentally surnamed Guo and was a documentary director. Yu Zhan had also told her that Guo Nan had a background.

There’s no way Guo Nan is Deputy Minister Guo’s son…

Does he know his son is taking advantage of his identity to do evil deeds?

On the surface, the calligraphers would naturally agree to cooperate with Deputy Minister Guo’s proposal. Usually, the upper management leaders merely made such empty promises at the spur of the moment. God knew when the documentary would be filmed.

Nobody expected Deputy Minister Guo to really plan on filming such a documentary. He suddenly called over Liu Man and Zhou Budai for a conversation and said, “You two are the best among the younger generation, representing the calligraphy circle’s future strength. I hope you will participate in the documentary’s filming by then and act as role models for youngsters.”

Zhou Budai nodded and said yes.

Liu Man, however, was silent.

As soon as she became silent, the atmosphere felt strange. Su Yi signaled her with his expression; he felt confused because Liu Man was usually courteous. Why would she not act politely during such a significant occasion?

Liu Man looked at Deputy Minister Guo and asked, “May I ask, is your son named Guo Nan?”

Chapter 317: Final Ranking

Liu Man smiled but did not speak. She would rather get chased after and fed by her parents than learn to study writing at such a young age.

Next, the host asked a few questions about the content of her work, including the details of her font and translation of words, “Many viewers and I did not understand Judge Cheng’s comment just now. What meanings are there to ‘Changle Weiyang,’ other than the names of two imperial palaces?”

Liu Man said, “Every tile in Weiyang Palace is engraved with the four characters, ‘Chang Le Wei Yang,’ which means ‘long-lasting happiness that never ends.’ This was every Han Dynasty emperor’s vision, and I only hope this little girl will always be ‘Chang Le Wei Yang’ regardless of the environment.”

The host incessantly nodded as if she learned a lot, “I have one last question. The hanfu you are wearing today is very unique. May I ask, where did you buy it? I want to buy a set, too.”

The host asked what was on every female viewer’s mind. They were particularly fond of Liu Man’s attire and started searching for it on Taobao while watching the stream on TV. As a result, they did not find the same hanfu or even similar styles.

TL’s Note: Taobao is a Chinese platform similar to Amazon.

Liu Man was worried that if she mentioned Zhong Jiangnan’s name, she would be suspected of advertising for him; however, since she was now Zhong Jiangnan’s model, there was nothing wrong with helping him promote. She thought about it and said, “Mr. Zhong Jiangnan gifted this set of Hanfu to me. It’s a set he designed before and is probably no longer available on the market.”

The host looked disappointed, “It’s so unfortunate. How can such good-looking clothes be off the market?”

After interviewing Liu Man, the host interviewed Zhou Budai and other authors who performed well.

At this moment, everyone’s results had been calculated. Ouyang Cen walked to the front and read aloud the final list of award winners in this year’s calligraphy exhibition. People who placed in the last thirty were Exhibition Wward winners, regardless of rankings. Their works would be hung and exhibited in the outer lobby after the award ceremony.

The twenty people in the middle would all receive the Excellence Award, regardless of rankings. Excluding being exhibited, the works of the Excellence Award can also enter the circulation market and be priced and sold.

Only the top ten could receive bonuses, which were not enormous amounts of money. The first place could get 30,000 yuan, and the tenth place could get 5,000 yuan. What everyone valued was not the money but receiving the professional certification from the Calligraphy Association, which meant that all signed works by the top ten could be circulated and sold from now on.

Ouyang Cen first revealed the Exhibition Award winners. Liu Man did not hear her name nor the names of Wu Qu and Zhou Budai.

Wu Qu turned his head and gratefully smiled at her.

Then came the Excellence Award. The remaining thirty people focused on listening to Ouyang Cen as he announced the names; they did not want to hear their names.

Wu Qu’s name appeared among them. He sighed in relief with a hint of pity and fortunateness. He already felt extremely satisfied with receiving the Excellence Award.

If Liu Man had not been kind enough to exchange papers with him, he would only have received the Exhibition Award.

The ten judges awarded them. Wu Qu took the award certificate from Chen Jianqiu, who shook hands with him and patted his shoulder, “Keep working hard. You will accomplish a lot in the future.”

“Thank you,” Wu Qu said with appreciation.

He was unlucky to be assigned to group eight and was lucky to encounter Liu Man and Chen Jianqiu. The experience of this exhibition was worth remembering for his whole life.

Deputy Minister Guo and the mayor awarded the top ten in person. Starting from the tenth, after reading each name, a judge would give a professional review and summary of their work with convincing reasoning.

Liu Man placed fifth, winning a bonus of 15,000 yuan.

Her reviewer was Cheng Zikun, “Liu Man’s work, ‘Innocence,’ has a unique concept, looking at ‘Han Dynasty’s Style’ from the perspective of a poor child in the Han Dynasty. It is accompanied by carved-out drawings, rich in imagination, and full of natural interest. Her wood inscriptions are in the Qin and Han seal script, and the font and characters’ structure draw on the style of the inscriptions. The writing is natural, and the entire work adds novel elements to the traditional fundamentals. Its unconstrained style aligns with the personality of young people in the status quo.”

Deputy Minister Guo placed the professional certificate in Liu Man’s hands, shook hands with her, and looked at her admiringly, “Young lady, you are young and promising.”

Deputy Minister Guo was the highest-ranking figure Liu Man came into contact with after transmigrating. In her previous life, he would have been ranked among the top nine ministers. She thanked him respectfully, then stood beside the sixth person with her certificate. The videographer gave her a close-up.

Meanwhile, the news tag of #Hanfu Goddess won fifth place in the Calligraphy Exhibition# returned to second place on the internet’s hot search leaderboard. The first place was still about the conflict between Yu Zhan and Vet’s Cuties 2. The popularity maintained its upward trend without losing popularity. There were two reasons: First, the three water army companies that Yu Zhan spent a large sum of money to hire were not freeloaders; Second, during the period when Liu Man was participating in the calligraphy competition, a large number of reversal plots appeared on the internet, which was an eye-opener for onlookers. For the time being, this will not be elaborated on.

Zhou Budai won first place with his work, “Western Regions,” which was expected by everyone.

The calligraphy exhibition officially ended.

Liu Man walked toward Su Yi and Yu Zhan with her certificate. Su Yi’s smile was so big that his eyes were disappearing.

Liu Man felt convinced of her results because the depth of her theme was far less than that of the top four. They looked at the Han Dynasty from the perspective of families, the nation, and the world, with ever-changing and magnificent events. Zhou Budai’s “Western Regions” was especially relevant to the status quo’s overall situation, for the nation wanted to rebuild the Silk Road.

In comparison, Liu Man’s “Innocence” was not powerful enough. It had a narrow vision and was limited to a corner deep within the palace, which the judges attributed to her female identity and lack of experience and knowledge.

How could they know that Liu Man had another purpose in choosing this theme? She did not mention this purpose when the judges asked the question, and she could not say it publicly.

Liu Man handed the certification to Su Yi and smiled as she said, “Please review it, teacher.”

Su Yi stared at the name “Liu Man” imprinted on the certificate, feeling a mixture of emotions. He had served as a judge for five exhibitions non-consecutively and had handled many people’s professional certificates, but it was the first time she saw one belonging to his apprentice.

God was kind to him, allowing him to meet his true heir in the twilight years of his life.

Su Yi returned the certificate to Liu Man, “You only placed fifth. It seems that my ‘accelerated course’ will have to continue in the future. After school starts, everything will continue as usual!”

Despite having said that, the smile on Su Yi’s face never fell.

Liu Man smiled joyfully and said, “Okay. As long as it’s your order, I will do it.”

“Enough. Look at how proud you are. Show the certificate to Xiao Yu,” Su Yi said. After being with him all morning, his impression of Yu Zhan changed significantly. After being criticized by netizens, the young man rushed to Gudu non-stop to accompany Liu Man as she participated in the competition. He could not have rested well in one night and stood at the venue all morning. It was arduous, but he did not show any impatience, and his gentle and affectionate eyes always fell on the girl in the venue.

Based on his more than eighty years of experience in life, Su Yi could confirm that this man’s feelings for Liu Man were sincere.

Chapter 316: The Innocent Child

Next to the carved drawing was a short inscription in the seal script.

It was a short essay titled “Innocence,” in which several words were written in a way that was very different from today. Not only were the television viewers unable to understand it, but several judges who were not good at the seal script could not understand it.

So the seal script judge Cheng Zikun read it carefully before reading it aloud to the other judges, “The child has a home, which is a hut built next to a banyan tree. The grass forces the wood to be lost, and the rafters have gone old. The green pavilion is without embellishment, and net worms weave hundreds of lines…”

TL’s Note: This is not a completely accurate translation and would sound way more poetic in Chinese! This ancient Chinese format is just really hard to translate…

After listening to the entire piece read aloud, the ten judges had a basic understanding: this short work described an innocent child’s home, set beside a banyan tree. The tall grass covered the threshold, and the door was breaking down. The blue-black windows were no longer see-through, and spider webs were everywhere…

The content and Liu Man’s drawing complemented each other, and the essay possessed the style of the Han Dynasty’s prose, with retro and simple wording that was concise.

Her inscribing skills were also quite profound. Unlike the meticulousness of other woodcarvers at the scene, every stroke her hand made was casual. She did not hesitate when she made each cut, controlling her strength adequately. To her, carving words with a knife was like writing on paper with a brush; nothing was different.

The judges from the inscription group scrutinized her carving with a magnifying glass in amazement. Such smooth wood carvings would have been impossible without years of practice.

But then again, the inscription was good, the painting was interesting, the essay was well-written, and the overall layout was beautiful, but what did any of this have to do with “Han Dynasty’s Style”??

Chen Jianqiu could not help but pose the question in everyone’s mind.

Liu Man explained, “Last Friday, I visited the Film and Television Base of Weiyang Palace with Zhou Budai. The place completely restored the former Weiyang Palace. From the magnificent palace, I could almost see the monarch in person, hundreds of officials worshipping him, and those dignified and beautiful palace concubines chatting and laughing at the night banquet. However, this kind of life is too far away from us. Even today, how many people can live such a luxurious and extravagant life? I think ‘Han Dynasty’s Style’ does not only include the glory and prosperity of the Han Dynasty but also the appearance of ordinary people.”

Another judge asked, “Then, did you see the child’s living environment in the film and television base?”

Liu Man shook her head, “I imagined it. I think there must be a dark and ugly aspect of Weiyang Palace, but I discovered nothing after walking through the entire film and television base. The experts and architects restored the palace’s beautiful aspect, but they forgot the large number of “lower-ranked people’ in the imperial palace. They may be lower-ranked slaves, eunuchs, felons in the prison, or abandoned concubines in the cold palace. Hence, I imagined that I was an innocent child living in the corner of the imperial palace. My home has blue-black opaque windows, doors with blurred patterns, rafters with gold paint falling off of their heads, and dead grass that has been dried by the sun…”

Liu Man’s words convinced the judges but were waves of shock to Yu Zhan. He had doubts before, but he was a hundred percent sure now that Liu Man was the little girl. He stared at her face in disbelief, trying to find what she had in common with that little girl.

The two looked nothing alike.

But their tone and expression while speaking were identical.

No wonder he felt that girl looked like Liu Man in the dream. It was not a delusion.

Cheng Zikun said, “No wonder you wrote ‘Changle Weiyang, never forget.’ I wondered how one could be ‘forever happy’ under such an environment, but you were referring to ‘Changle Palace’ and ‘Weiyang Palace.’ Writing about ‘Han Dynasty’s Style’ from the perspective of the lower ranks in the imperial palace is a unique idea.”

TL’s Note: “Changle Weiyang” has the meaning of being forever happy if you read it as “Chang Le Wei Yang,” but they can also refer to the two palaces.

Chen Jianqiu said, “Indeed, your sword is eccentric and does not follow the ordinary path,” So far, the judges had only seen other works praising the celebrities of the Han Dynasty or its greatness using the highest commendation.

TL’s Note: Saying “[someone’s] sword is eccentric” means they are solving a problem with an unusual solution or treating a matter from a unique perspective.

Because of Su Xuezhen’s incident, Wang Qinghai had stayed low-key and dared not speak casually, but he suddenly asked Liu Man, “Your subject does not require wood-carving, and you could have drawn with a brush. Why did you choose wood inscription rather than writing on paper?”

Wang Qinghai indicated that Liu Man was suspicious of deliberately flaunting and showing off her skills.

Chen Jianqiu, to the side, was annoyed to death by Wang Qinghai and wondered why the Vice President of the Association Ouyang Cen did not also cancel his qualifications as a judge. Since it was a free-response evaluation, they naturally had to show their unique skills. If they pretended to be low-key and hid their skills, there was no need for them to participate in this exhibition.

Facing Wang Qinghai’s challenge, Liu Man said calmly, “Because the topic is ‘Han Dynasty’s Style.’ The lower-class people in Han Palace were impoverished and usually had no access to paper. I treated myself as if I were a child writing and drawing. What would I do with no paper? I could only carve and draw using a knife. Besides, I think everyone has scribbled on the table when they are young. My carving on the table aligns exactly with my protagonist’s nature.”

Liu Man’s explanation was truly convincing. A judge from the seal-cutting group smiled and said, “So your work is an innocent child’s graffiti?”

Liu Man nodded and said yes.

The judges whispered to each other before writing down their scoring and comments for Liu Man on the paper. Then, they went to review the next piece of work.

After that, the judges did not encounter any work that particularly interested or refreshed them—until they saw Zhou Budai’s calligraphy work in cursive script.

Zhou Budai’s piece was named “Western Regions.”

TL’s Note: The western regions were westward of ancient China’s central plains. Chinese like to call them the “Western Regions,” but a more well-known name is “Turkestan.”

He cleverly wrote the names of the twenty-eight countries of the Western Regions into a rhyme poem with seven characters in each line, with exactly fifty-six characters. The poem alternated between flat and slanted characters, and the rhythm was strict.

“Wonderful. Very wonderful!”

“The cursive script is also written exquisitely!”

The judges were in awe.

Zhou Budai memorized the names of twenty-eight countries in the Western Regions, which few people could do, not to mention his ability to write a poem using fixed characters and rhymes within such a short time.

The judges had no doubts about Zhou Budai, so they straightforwardly scored and wrote comments.

At noon, all the authors’ works had finally been reviewed. It was time for scores to be totaled next, and the staff members entered the venue to help the judges and save time.

The authors still had to stand waiting motionlessly before their tables. Because elders, such as Su Yi and Ouyang Cen, and upper management could not tolerate the long periods of standing, someone carried over chairs and hot tea so they could take a break.

The host and videographer from the TV station seized the opportunity to interview authors they were interested in.

They first rushed toward Liu Man.

“Hello, can I ask you a few questions?” The host looked slightly excited as she faced Liu Man at such a close distance. She felt excited even if she was a woman!

Liu Man nodded, “Of course.”

The host took out the manuscript with questions she had prepared beforehand and asked, “May I ask, when did you start learning calligraphy and seal-cutting?”

“I learned seal-cutting first, approximately between the age of three and four.”

“I’m in disbelief. Nowadays, many children between the ages of three and four have parents chasing after them to feed them.”

Chapter 315: Another Crossover

After making all the preparations, Liu Man operated the knife stroke by stroke, starting from the upper right corner of the wooden table.

She even knows how to inscribe!!!

This was probably the only thought in everyone’s mind.

The old friends standing beside Su Yi said,

“This young apprentice you took in is no ordinary person.”

“You taught well!”

“I really envy you for encountering such a talented youngster.”

In the face-to-face round, they saw with their own eyes how Liu Man wrote “Yun Yang Ding” using two fonts. Their feelings of shock were similar to Cheng Zikun and Chen Jianqiu at that time. Besides, the seal script version of “Yun Yang Ding” was hanging now in the outer lobby of the exhibition center, where Su Maolin’s “Po Fu Yao” was supposed to hang, for countless tourists to see.

Su Yi said with rare humility, “How many months have I been teaching her? It was her previous teacher who enlightened her. That Madam Xu was like a Goddess! If she were alive, I am afraid she would also become a pivotal figure in today’s calligraphy circle.”

Yu Zhan, who stood beside Su Yi, heard the words “Madam Xu,” and his heart skipped a beat. He recalled the girl’s words from his dream:

Little Zhao, Madam Xu…

Zhou Budai watched Liu Man with amazement as she skillfully used the carving knife. He received praise for his intelligence and genius since he was a child, but after encountering Liu Man, the freak, he understood the phrase “one would not get hurt without any comparison.” He wanted to cry but had no tears… Could she leave some room for people with “mediocre talents” like them?

Wu Qu did not look at Liu Man at all. He remained grateful but was also afraid she would affect his performance. This girl had already surpassed his understanding of genius. One more look at her would make him feel unbalanced! He could not afford to write another incorrect character!

The twenty people who belonged to the seal-cutting and carving groups felt a bit surprised, too. Why did a person from a calligraphy group suddenly come to compete with them?? Although it was the free-response round, one should not have enough freedom to crossover.

Among the judges, Cheng Zikun, who liked Liu Man the most, felt excited. He did not expect the girl to save a trick up her sleeves. Cheng Zikun would wander to her every once in a while and check up on her carving progress.

Deputy Minister Guo and the mayor followed Ouyang Cen upstairs for a cup of tea halfway through the round, and when they returned, they discovered the judges and almost all the spectators focusing entirely on a girl. Deputy Minister Guo remembered Liu Man vaguely because she was the only girl in the room and one of the only two youngsters.

He could not help but ask Ouyang Cen out of curiosity about Liu Man’s background.

“She is Su Yi’s last apprentice, and her background is nothing worth detailing,” Ouyang Cen indicated that Liu Man was just an ordinary girl, “However, she crossed over from the regular script group to the seal script group, and now within the time enough for just a cup of tea, she has crossed over to the carving group. It’s truly magical. It’s not uncommon for someone to master both calligraphy and seal-cutting and under normal conditions, you would master one method before practicing the other. No matter how talented, it takes time to hone these skills. To master both skills, you must be at least forty years old.”

The mayor said with surprise, “This girl is impressive!”

“My son is about the same age as she, but he can’t even write well with a pen,” Deputy Minister Guo looked at the typical “someone else’s kid” and thought about his son. He hated the iron for not becoming steel.

TL’s Note: The idiom “hating iron for not becoming steel” means feeling resentful toward something for failing to meet expectations while impatient to see improvement.

Ouyang Cen felt Deputy Minister Guo’s son was the norm for youngsters nowadays. Liu Man could only reach such a level at this age if she had no care for what was going on in the external world since she started practicing writing as a child. She had to have thought of nothing distracting, resisted temptation from anything online, and not gone out to play with friends. She would have to study calligraphy every day from the moment she opened her eyes to when she closed them, wishing the brush was her toy.

When he thought of this, Ouyang Cen stroked his beard and smiled. That would be impossible! Not even monks in temples could achieve that now. Besides, Liu Man was a cyber star and could not bear to abandon the internet. Perhaps he did not know enough. Everything had an exception, and maybe she was a rare genius.

The cameraman from the TV station really wanted to give Liu Man a closeup, but he did not dare to disobey the judges’ demand. He could only zoom in as closely as possible so the audience could better see Liu Man’s actions. They saw her calmly pushing the wood powder off the table while a handful had already piled up on the ground.

Liu Man was not much slower at carving than those writing calligraphy with a brush.

No matter how much the others stared at her, she remained undisturbed and focused on presenting her idea. Regardless of whether she could win an award at last, she wanted to do her best, or she would not do justice to Madam Xu and Professor Su’s teachings.

Besides, Yu Zhan traveled thousands of miles in one night for her, and he was watching her at the scene. She became even more motivated as she thought of this.

When only two minutes remained before time was up, Liu Man finally put down her carving knife and brushed the remaining wood powder on the table with her hand, sorting it out.

After two minutes passed, Chen Jianqiu requested all authors to take one step back and prohibited them from moving their brushes or knives.

The ten judges began to review each work in turn, and the videographer could finally re-enter the central area. He followed the judges and aimed the camera at the works on the tables.

Everyone had a different understanding of the “Han Dynasty Style.” Some wrote voluminous ancient Chinese prose with hundreds of words, some wrote poems, and some engraved words that covered a whole piece of rough stone…

In the eyes of the audience, these were works of art that they would not come close to writing their entire life. -_-

Indeed, there was no doubt about each author’s capability since they could proceed to this round. Each had their own style, and their works contained no major flaws. It was not easy for the judges to find faults, and they could only select the best from the best.

Wu Qu’s evaluation was before Liu Man’s. He wrote a long poem in regular script, describing the story of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty and how he hid the beauty in the golden house. The paper was neat and clean, and the font was strong and simple.

TL’s Note: “Hiding the beauty in the golden house” means hiding one’s young wife or mistress in a splendid abode.

The ten judges carefully read the entire poem and discussed it with each other in low voices. Unlike the face-to-face evaluation, the judges in this round would not criticize the work in front of the author. Each person’s score was to be revealed at the last minute.

Two judges asked Wu Qu a few questions, and they nodded after Wu Qu responded, scored on their respective charts, wrote notes, and continued to review the next author.

Wu Qu’s forehead was covered with sweat. He felt unsure and was afraid his answer, just now, would dissatisfy the judges.

When it was Liu Man’s turn, more than half of the works had already been reviewed. Liu Man could not say she was not nervous as she watched the ten calligraphy masters approach her.

A judge from the seal-cutting group, seeing Liu Man’s work for the first time, laughed and said, “Hey, it also has a small painting, which is quite childlike.”

The right half of the wooden table was a very simple carved-out drawing containing a courtyard with a tree, and a little girl sat on the threshold. The author carved these objects coarsely, and the courtyard’s details were blurred. The leaves were made with merely a few random cuts, and one could not see the little girl’s specific silhouette.

Strangely, the judges did not feel it was messy. If one looked at it from a distance, one would discover how vivid the entire picture seemed.

Chapter 314: Giving Away the Paper and Carving

Noticing that the camera was aiming at him, Wu Qu’s writing posture became rigid. As an ordinary person, he had never been showcased on TV and rarely received attention from many. He felt nervous and restrained as he thought of the countless viewers watching him now, and his brain blanked out, almost forgetting what he had just thought about.

However, the videographer moved closer and filmed the piece he had just begun, putting more pressure on Wu Qu. He accidentally wrote the wrong character.

But the videographer did not care; he turned around and left to film the others after he finished.

Wu Qu stared at the mistake on the paper helplessly.

Judge Chen Jianqiu had already mentioned that each person only had one piece of rice paper, which meant only one chance. Was he going to accept the mistake and continue writing?

Wu Qu was a perfectionist. To be more accurate, all calligraphers were perfectionists. He felt discomfort all over his body and exasperated when he saw the wrong character on the paper, thinking that the one incorrect character affected the entire piece’s layout, which seemed extremely ugly. Asking him to continue writing was as uncomfortable as forcing him to swallow a fly.

Coincidentally, Chen Jianqiu passed Wu Qu on his patrol at this moment.

Wu Qu called him, “Mr. Chen, can I please change my rice paper?”

“What happened?”

Chen Jianqiu had a deep impression of Wu Qu’s courage, for the shameless Su Xuezhen would still be a judge if Wu Qu had not dared to expose him.

Wu Qu pointed at the paper, “I wrote a character wrong.”

Chen Jianqiu looked where he pointed and saw the wrong character, which was an unsalvageable mistake. He shook his head and said, “Did you not listen carefully to the rules I read out loud just now? There’s only one piece of paper. You can cross this character out and write the correct one to the side.”

“Will the correction affect my score?” Wu Qu asked anxiously.

Chen Jianqiu did not know how to respond to the question. He could only say,

“Few judges pay much attention to the neatness of the piece. Most people, including me, don’t care much.”

The ambiguous answer made Wu Qu feel even more uncertain. He explained, “I wrote the wrong character because that videographer disrupted me just now, so I made a mistake.”

Chen Jianqiu asked, “Did he touch you?”

Wu Qu said no.

“Then you can’t change the paper,” Although Chen Jianqiu felt sympathetic for Wu Qu, the rules were stipulated to constrain everyone with no exceptions. Besides, the videographer had filmed others, and none were in the same situation as Wu Qu, demonstrating he was not psychologically strong enough.

“You can continue writing. It doesn’t matter. I’ll tell the other judges about your special situation when we evaluate in the end,” Chen Jianqiu said, already being very considerate of Wu Qu.

Then, he walked to the TV station’s videographer and warned him sternly that no one was allowed in the center of the venue and that he should not wander around to disturb others.

The videographer immediately apologized and obediently stood at the perimeters of the venue, not daring to move again.

Wu Qu stared absent-mindedly at his mistake in despair. He was self-aware and knew he was at the lower-middle level among the forty people in the calligraphy group. Even if he made no mistake, his chances of winning were slim, but now, even the last hint of the possibility to win was lost.

Liu Man was positioned diagonally behind Wu Qu. She saw Wu Qu and Chen Jianqiu talking, and after Chen Jianqiu left, Wu Qu placed his brush down and remained motionless.

She felt strange.

Seeing that Chen Jiangqiu was patrolling over, Liu Man asked him in a low voice, “Mr. Chen, what happened to Wu Qu?”

Chen Jianqiu truly appreciated Liu Man’s works and told her with a pleasant expression, “Wu Qu wrote a wrong character and wants to change his rice paper, which is impossible according to the rules. He probably feels mentally burdened.”

As he said it, Chen Jianqiu noticed Liu Man’s blank rice paper and said with surprise, “Why haven’t you started yet?”

“I haven’t decided where to write on.”

Chen Jianqiu felt it was inexplicable. Where else could she write except for on the paper?

“But I have decided now,” Liu Man smiled, “Mr. Chen, give my rice paper to Wu Qu. I’m not going to use paper this round.”

Chen Jianqiu felt surprised, “Then what are you going to use?”

“I’m carving the words.”

While Liu Man considered the “Han Dynasty’s Style,” she unintentionally discovered an additional small carving knife in the pen holder on her table. The staff at the venue probably rushed too much when they prepared, which caused the negligence. Her thoughts gradually became clear after seeing the knife.

Previous chapters have mentioned that Liu Man studied calligraphy with Madam Xu as a child, starting with carving; therefore, she was the best at seal cutting.

Since she would not need this piece of rice paper, she could do something good and swap with Wu Qu.

“Even if you give your paper to Wu Qu, we won’t additionally prepare a rough stone or wooden plaque for you, so how are you going to carve?” Chen Jianqiu was in disapproval of her decision.

Under this circumstance, it was better to act conservative than unconventional.

Liu Man looked toward the solid wood table in front of her.

At first, Chen Jianqiu did not understand her, when suddenly, he thought of it and asked in disbelief, “You’re carving on the table?!”

“Mhm, I’ll compensate you for the material cost according to the table’s price afterward.”

Chen Jianqiu: “…”

“I can’t decide on my own regarding this matter between you and Wu Qu. I have to discuss it with the other judges.”

Chen Jianqiu immediately walked toward the other judges.

At this time, there were only sixty minutes left until the end of the evaluation. Liu Man was not in a hurry, for she did not intend to write a voluminous essay.

The judges quickly reached a consensus and agreed that Liu Man could give her rice paper to Wu Qu. First, Wu Qu’s situation was indeed extenuating, and giving away the rice paper did not mean re-preparing one, so the other writers could not refute it. Secondly, they reread the competition’s regulations, which neither prohibited participants from exchanging papers nor using wooden tables as carving carriers for creation.

Liu Man completely took advantage of the loophole in the rules.

Because the videographer no longer took close-ups of the contestants’ works one by one, the audience before the TV could only see a group of people quietly writing or carving at their tables from a distance. Amateurs could not understand anything, which honestly made it super boring!! Besides, this scene would last for another hour!

Just as everyone was hesitating about switching the channel, a judge suddenly took the rice paper from Liu Man’s table and gave it to the man diagonally in front of her.

The camera was so far away that the audience could not see the man clearly, and they could spot Liu Man’s position only because of her attire.

The audience felt bewildered. What was the meaning of moving the rice paper over? Were they exchanging evaluation papers? Why was not that man’s rice paper swapped over?

Liu Man’s next moves were even stranger; she put everything on the table, such as brushes and inkstones, onto the floor and surprisingly started gesturing at the empty table’s surface.

The audience decided not to change to another channel; they were curious about what Liu Man wanted to do.

Not only were they curious, but everyone present at the scene was. Some of Liu Man’s competitors frequently looked toward her and Wu Qu. Zhou Budai also temporarily stopped writing and looked up, trying to figure out what Liu Man was doing.

Chapter 313: Extemporaneous Topic

The venue was quiet, for nobody continued to talk.

Ouyang Cen and two middle-aged aristocratic men walked to the front. The sage-like Ouyang Cen, again, wore a gray robe, while the other two wore formal attire. The shirt and trousers were the standard attire for government officials.

One was Gudu’s mayor, and the other had a great background and was the upper-level Deputy Minister of Culture, surnamed Guo.

A hint of surprise flashed through Yu Zhan’s eyes after seeing this man.

At this moment, Yu Zhan stood among a group consisting of middle-aged and elderly literati. One could say he had no sense of existence, but he was the youngest and most good-looking person. One could say he had a sense of presence, but he was the only person who did not belong to the circle of people in such an artistic environment.

The mayor of Gudu went on stage to give a speech first, reading from a pre-written manuscript. He still read the stereotypical official phrases, which included “implement XXX,” “adhere to XXX,” “I am honored and grateful to the National Calligraphy Association for choosing Gudu as the venue,” and so on. His long speech went on for about ten minutes.

Everyone suppressed their impatience and finally heard the end of the speech.

Next up was Deputy Minister Guo’s turn to speak. He had no manuscript and gave an impromptu speech on the spot. He first introduced the country’s current work orientation in the cultural aspect, which was to adhere to innovation and promote traditional culture.

Then, he said, “I just took a brief look at the contestants at the scene, and there are only a handful of young faces. Could it be that the younger generation can’t write calligraphy well? I don’t think so. It’s because they can’t calm down and study. Nowadays, endless new things exist in society to entertain people, so much so that young people have completely lost interest in the things left by their ancestors. Even very young children are playing with their mobile phones. Under such a social environment, would they still be able to know about calligraphy, Chinese medicine, embroidery, folk music, and opera when they grow up?

Although I don’t want to admit it, our traditional culture is declining and even experiencing gaps. I hope that the success of this calligraphy exhibition will make people realize that traditional culture is the collective wisdom of countless people from ancient times to the present. They are the crystal, the most precious heritage passed down to us by our ancestors. They are the treasures and quintessence of the nation! We have the obligation to inherit and carry them forward.”

Deputy Minister Guo’s speech made the young audience in front of the TV ashamed, for he referred to them when he mentioned the younger generation.

Indeed, if it were not for the Hanfu Goddess, they would not have known this calligraphy exhibition. Even if they were watching the stream now, most were joining in the fun, and few really understood calligraphy. Although some studied calligraphy when they were children, none of them persisted, and all gave up.

Deputy Minister Guo’s speech was thought-provoking. He was given warm applause by all who were present, and Yu Zhan applauded, too.

Ouyang Cen was the last to give a speech, “I would like to expand on the issue regarding cultural gaps mentioned by Minister Guo just now. I was one of the judges at the calligraphy exhibition thirty years ago. At that time, more than half of the contestants were young men between twenty and thirty years old, and most of them are now famous calligraphers and the backbone of our country’s calligraphy circle. However, in this session, there are only two finalists in this age group. I’m very afraid that in another thirty years, after our generation and the backbone pass away, will there be any successors in the next generation?

It’s our first attempt to cooperate with the media for a live stream because we want everyone to understand that calligraphy is not as advanced as you think. It’s actually an everyday art that everyone can get started with. Becoming a calligrapher indeed requires talent, but treating calligraphy as a hobby to cultivate your temperament is easy. I hope more people can like calligraphy and try to write it.”

The camera gave Ouyang Cen a closeup. The white-haired elder looked pitiful; he was really worrying about calligraphy and having no successors.

Even the netizens watching the live stream on their phones stopped chirping or commenting and silently listened to the elder’s teachings.

After Ouyang Cen finished speaking, he announced that the competition had officially begun.

Judge Chen Jianqiu first read aloud the rules for the competition: All phones must be turned off, and the creation time was limited to ninety minutes. They prepared a page of rice paper, a rough stone, or a wooden plaque for each contestant according to their work’s category. It meant everyone had only one chance at their creation; if anything went wrong, they could not regret it and start over.

The ten judges began to negotiate the topic on the spot. Each person thought of a topic, wrote it down, and the ten voted, in the end, for the most adequate topic.

A seal-cutting judge from the capital announced the final topic: “Liu Bang, the great ancestor of the Han Dynasty, founded the Western Han Dynasty. As an emperor, he first established his capital in Luoyang and soon moved it to Chang’an, which was known as the Western Han in history. It was the beginning of a prosperous dynasty. Since we are all in Chang’an right now, recalling this period of history should make us feel even more deeply. Hence, please use your best method to describe the “Han Dynasty Style” in your impression.”

The venue remained silent after he finished speaking. Everyone was contemplating the judge’s words and carefully analyzing the topic.

The spectating calligraphers also reflected on the topic. Su Yi felt the topic was not complex, but it meant everyone could create a piece based on their ideas. One could only stand out if their perspective were unprecedented and unique.

Yu Zhan had no specific feelings for the Han Dynasty before; like the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, the Han Dynasty was nothing more than the country’s name at a specific time. However, when he heard “Han Dynasty Style” just now, he subconsciously recalled the little girl in his dream, the majestic Weiyang Palace, and the various characters walking through the palace.

Liu Man was thinking about Weiyang Palace, too.

To her, the so-called “Han Dynasty Style” was limited to the small world in the corner of Weiyang Palace. Those emperors with genius talents and achievements that shocked the past and the present were also quite distant from her. She had never seen the prosperous scene of the Han Dynasty; all her knowledge about the outside world originated from Madam Xu’s books and the stories told by women in the cold palace.

Liu Man fell into a dilemma. She did not know what she could write. If she wrote something everyone knew about, she would fall into a cliché, and it would be impossible for her to win an award.

A few quick-thinking contestants had already started moving their brushes or knives.

Zhou Budai was thinking hard, too. The reason he struggled was because he could write about too many things. As a Gudu native, he could describe the history of the Han Dynasty based on years and events since he was six years old. Writing a piece on the “Han Dynasty’s Style” was simple for him.

Wu Qu moved his brush confidently. When he was on retreat, he contemplated many topics, and some were similar to the “Han Dynasty’s Style” topic. He had guessed the right topic and prepared beforehand, so his writing naturally came smoothly.

The videographer from the TV station saw how quick and good-looking Wu Qu’s writing posture was and walked over to him while holding the camera, wanting to give him a closeup.

Chapter 312: The Last Round

Yu Zhan felt so tired that he was constantly yawning, and Liu Man had to wake up early tomorrow. The duo chatted for a while, said good night to each other, and Liu Man returned to rest in her room.

During breakfast the next day, Su Yi stared at the man who suddenly appeared next to his beloved apprentice with a complicated look, as if he was saying, “Stop trying to disguise it. I know you two stayed together last night.”

Liu Man did not know whether to laugh or cry as she introduced her boyfriend to Su Yi. Yu Zhan met Su Yi’s appraising look calmly, greeted Su Yi respectfully, and did not forget to thank Su Yi for his Weibo comment the previous day.

Su Yi was satisfied with Yu Zhan’s etiquette and behavior, “Since you’ve arrived, let’s go to the venue together after breakfast.”

Liu Man sighed in relief. She was afraid Su Yi would dislike Yu Zhan who came uninvited.

While eating breakfast, Su Yi gave Liu Man some final notes and reminders. The trio did not bring their phones to prevent Liu Man’s mood from being influenced by the online comments.

Everything was about Liu Man today!

Of course, they sent messages to their friends and family beforehand in case they were worrying.

The free-response round was also hosted in the Deputy Hall of the Gudu Exhibition Center. When the trio arrived at the venue, the exhibition center had already flooded with people.

To put it more accurately, since Liu Man and Zhou Budai popularized the calligraphy exhibition online, the Gudu Exhibition Center kept a consistently high traffic. Hence, the National Calligraphy Association shockingly invited the Gudu TV Station to live broadcast the entire last round of this year’s Calligraphy Exhibition. It was the first time this exhibition cooperated with the media since its establishment sixty years ago.

Another reason for doing this was because the incident involving Su Xuezhen and Su Maolin had such a bad influence that the National Calligraphy Association wanted to publicize the entire process to prove its impartiality and fairness. Naturally, the losers would have nothing to say. After all, the Gudu TV Station was second only to the National TV Station in terms of authority among Northwest locals.

At that moment, the live-streaming team of Gudu TV Station set up their streaming equipment at the backdoor entrance of the deputy hall to film the contestants of the last round who were straggling in, and a host was giving a simple explanation.

When Liu Man and the other two walked over, the videographer immediately aimed the camera at her. She was wearing hanfu and looked too prominent in the crowd; moreover, she was so pretty and could attract viewers. Liu Man was wearing “Su Lian,” designed by Zhong Jiangnan. It was a set of lotus-pink plain hanfu. Indeed, she looked like a plain lotus that emerged from the mud but remained unstained.

TL’s Note: The meaning of “Su Lian” in Chinese is plain lotus.

The host had done her homework beforehand and told the audience watching the television, “This girl is one of the popular contenders for the award. Her name is Liu Man, and she is an Ancient Chinese Literature major at the Capital University. She is the apprentice of Famous Calligrapher Mr. Su Yi, the elder beside her. She entered the exhibition with her piece in the regular script but passed last week’s face-to-face round with the small seal script, which was a huge surprise. I don’t know if this talented girl has any other hidden skills for us to look forward to.”

After the invention of the internet, the young generation rarely watched television, but at this moment, tens of thousands of youngsters were waiting in front of their TVs to watch the live stream.

Many were anxiously waiting online. Some could not receive the satellite signal of Gudu TV Station at home, and some were office workers and could not watch the television. Therefore, certain generous people opened live-stream rooms and used their phones to record the TV footage to share with them.

Everyone felt satisfied to see the picturesque Hanfu Goddess. At the same time, they realized that in addition to a prestigious elder beside her, an incredibly handsome man also accompanied her.

No one doubted his identity. Everyone knew he must be Doctor Yu himself.

When they passed the camera, Yu Zhan smiled slightly out of courtesy at it. Anyone who saw his smile at this moment felt their heart skip a beat.

Even women who had already retired were exclaiming as they watched the television: Where did this young man come from? He is very handsome.

“I’m finally seeing Doctor Yu’s entire face, especially in the HD version. Why does my heart hurt so much…”

“Doctor Yu should continue to wear a mask. It’s enough that he’s scourging the Hanfu Goddess; he shouldn’t be the bane of our existence, too…”

“I agree with the comment above.”

“+1”

“+2”

TL’s Note: The netizens saying “+ [a number]” mean “me too.”

The trio walked fast and disappeared from the camera without leaving time for the audience to reflect.

Although the TV station was invited to live-stream in this round, there was still no seats for ordinary audience. People without permission were prohibited from entering the venue to watch.

If it were not for Su Yi’s prestige, Yu Zhan could not have come in.

The deputy hall’s layout this time was also significantly different from that of the face-to-face round. The participant and association member spectator seats were removed, and there were no judge seats. The sixty wooden tables almost occupied the entire venue.

During the round, non-participants, including Su Yi, could only stand in the perimeter and watch; they were not allowed to enter the central area. The ten judges could move around like proctors and check everyone’s writing or carving on the spot at any given time.

Su Yi had already introduced the six other judges to Liu Man. One was the regular script judge replacing Su Xuezhen, and the other five were seal-cutting and carving judges from the capital, designated based on the types of fonts and carving carriers they were skilled at. When the time came, these five judges would also evaluate Liu Man.

Under such harsh circumstances, one could not cheat, and taking shortcuts through favors was even more impossible.

The sixty participants who advanced to this round were all apprentices of famous calligraphists, excluding a few people who, like Wu Qu, taught themselves. Su Yi knew these ten people, and other participants’ teachers knew them as well.

Here, it was not about who was more prestigious but rather who was the most capable.

Yu Zhan saw a set of brush, ink, paper, inkstone, rough seal-graving stones, and wooden plaques, which were novel to him. A name card that read “Liu Man” hung to the side of one of the wooden tables with a set of brush, ink, paper, and inkstone.

The competition was set to start at nine o’clock. At half past eight, everyone had already arrived. Su Yi walked to greet and chat in circles with old friends, and Liu Man saw Wu Qu and Zhou Budai, who came over to greet her one after one. She introduced Yu Zhan to them.

Wu Qu went on seclusion this week to prepare for the competition, completely segregating himself from the external environment. He had no idea what had occurred. He conversed with Yu Zhan for a while, and even though they were ten years of age apart, they had no trouble finding shared topics and even joyfully exchanged contact information. He felt Liu Man’s boyfriend was as friendly as she was, and they were a good match.

Zhou Budai had always felt quite curious about Liu Man’s boyfriend. He once had thoughts similar to those of the Hanfu Goddess’ male fans. He thought this man must have saved the galaxy in his previous life to find a perfect girlfriend like Liu Man.

After seeing him in person, Zhou Budai silently sighed internally. For the first time, he started doubting his appearance. God must have not been mindful when He created his face.

Time passed very swiftly as they chatted. At nine o’clock sharp, everyone walked to stand before their respective tables.
