Chapter 15: Passing The Exam

Hii, dudes! It’d be great if you guys give us an honest and true review on NovelUpdates. We’re curious as of to how y’all feel about this story, and how smoothly our translations are going~ Gogo! (You can even write about your opinion in the comments section cc;)

Liu Man immediately stopped and turned to the three teachers. She looked respectful and reverent. The teachers felt quite warm.

“Do you play any other instruments?” The woman asked her.

Liu Man hadn’t realized that the teacher would’ve asked this question, so she hesitated and thought about it before speaking,

“I know how to play the GuQin.”

The woman was surprised with her response, “You mean, GuZheng?”

TL Note: In China, GuQin and GuZheng are very different. In terms of difficulty, a GuQin is way harder than a GuZheng and in terms of how old the instrument is, GuQin is also older than GuZheng. Meaning not many people play this instrument in modern-day.

“No, the GuZheng is the GuZheng, the GuQin is the GuQin.” Liu Man shook her head.

“Sorry, I don’t know that much about folk music,” The woman smiled, and her eyes shined with interest, “I hope that I’ll be able to get the chance to hear you play the GuQin in the near future.”

After Liu Man left, the associate professor asked the woman, “How did you know Liu Man can play other instruments?”

“Because of my intuition, of course. She’s such a hardworking and interesting girl, I wouldn’t have believed that she would be as boring as the piece she chose. She must’ve put her hard work somewhere else.”

“But we’ve never heard before that she played folk music.”

“Everyone has a joker card,” The woman suddenly thought of something and asked, “Doesn’t Tang Tu’s girlfriend study folk music?”

“Yes, she plays the GuZheng.”

The woman started to think deeply about something.

Liu Man, however, didn’t know about the conversation the teachers had about her. The moment she got out, she was grabbed by Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina to go and eat lunch. Playing the piano was a physical challenge, and so they were all starving.

Because the teachers graded them live, the scores came out in the afternoon. The grade was posted online and Liu Man opened her computer to check in the system.

86.

“I passed, I passed, I passed! How wonderful!” Liu Man’s lips widened. She was so glad that she wanted to jump, finally revealing the vividness of her age.

Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina laughed along with her. They hadn’t seen Liu Man show such a bright smile in such a long time. They were more used to this childish side of her.

“Let’s have a feast tonight to celebrate the passing of your exam,” Wang Nina suggested.

Liu Man remembered her rendezvous with Yu Zhan, that was to receive cat food, “I have to go home tonight. Raincheck? I will pay for the meal.”

“Raincheck, we will definitely remember. Adding onto your promise of a feast when you gain 100 fans, you owe us two feasts!” Li Xiaoru said with a huge grin.

The end of year exam for professions, was the most important one out of all of the exams. After that, there were only a few general knowledge exams and one music theory test. As long as she can memorize the textbook and the guidelines handed out by professors, she would be able to pass.

Liu Man suddenly felt a lot more relaxed than before.

After she finished her last class of the day, she realized that it was still early afternoon, so she rode the subway and headed straight for Yu Zhan’s pet hospital. As she pushed open the glass doors, she saw that all waiting chairs in front of the reception desk were taken, and that there were about seven to eight of them. They were all taken up by women, and if you looked closely, you would be able to see that they were all wearing makeup and attractive attire. It was winter, but even so, they were still wearing skirts and tight sweaters.

Each was holding their own pet in their arms. There were dogs, cats, and bunnies. The few dogs were running around wildly, and the scene seemed a bit crazy.

It was completely different compared to that night’s chillness.

Compared to them, Liu Man was wearing much simpler attire. The light makeup she had put on for the piano exam this morning was almost completely gone. Because she was afraid of the coldness, she had still worn that black long puffer jacket, and had wrapped herself up.

A nurse-like girl behind the front desk glanced at Liu Man and her student-like book bag, walked up to her and asked, “What kind of problem does your pet have? A dog or a cat?”

Liu Man replied, “I’m here for the cat food.”

But to Liu Man’s surprise, the girl said, “We are a pet hospital, not a pet shop. We don’t sell cat food.”

The confident look on the nurse’s face made Liu Man question for a second whether she was in the wrong place or remember the promise between Yu Zhan and her wrongly.

She took a step out of the store just to look at the sign to make sure she was in the right store, and sure enough, there was a big “Zhan” written up there. She walked in again and asked, “You seriously don’t sell cat food?”

TL Note: Zhan as in Yu Zhan, just a reminder~

The nurse looked annoyed and said, “Yes, we’re a hospital. We don’t sell pet food, we don’t give showers, and we don’t give trims.”

She had similar conversations about this everyday, and she was tired of it. Even though they had only opened for a month, the overall rating of their hospital had already been flooded with five stars and 40+ comments. Every single comment started with how great the doctor was, and how hot he was. Lots of female customers were jealous that she could work at his place, and that her boss was so hot. But what’s the use of the boss looking hot if you couldn’t date him anyway.

Seeing the nurse’s attitude, Liu Man left. On the way home, she’d pulled out her phone and texted Yu Zhan, “I just went to your store. Your nurse said that you don’t sell cat food.”

If she knew Yu Zhan had been so unreliable, she would’ve already gone out partying with Li Xiaoru and Nina.

Yu Zhan had just finished a poodle’s sterilization process. He had just taken off his gloves, when he heard his phone vibrate. It was WeChat. The dog owner, a young women also heard it, and she stared at Yu Zhan intensely and asked,

“Can I add your WeChat? If my dog has any problems in the future, then I can contact you.”

“Sorry, but my WeChat contact is private. If you have any problems, then you can call this number.” Yu Zhan said while he handed the woman a business card with his name and phone number on it.

The woman was very disappointed by the rejection of Yu Zhan.

Her house was miles away from this hospital. She had only come here because one of her friends had said that a new hospital opened, and that the shopkeeper was not only overly hot and super kind, but that he also had the skills of a true doctor. So, she then especially came all the way here to bring her baby poodle for its sterilization.

After seeing the doctor himself, she had thought that her friend was one hundred percent correct. The doctor was so hot that she could barely breathe, the surgery was a success, and the dog had no problem. He had a lot of patience with her and always carried a smile. Yet, even so, she still felt pushed away from and distanced from him.

The woman carried her dog out to the lobby. Seeing the other female customers, she wanted to laugh at herself. She was an idiot, a fantasizer. This man must have such high expectations for a woman.

A few minutes passed by, and Liu Man received Yu Zhan’s reply.

“Sorry, the nurse is new, so she doesn’t know how things work here. Wait until work is over, and I’ll deliver the cat food to you.”

Liu Man wasn’t angry anymore, so she replied with a “Alright.”

……

After passing the piano exam, Liu Man felt relaxed all over. She started streaming right after she ate dinner. She hadn’t streamed for two days in a row. So, when she checked the audience list, maybe because she had started early today, her normal fans weren’t online.

After a few minutes, Otaku Boy came online.

“Where did you go off to during these two days? I missed you quite a bit.” – Otaku Boy

“I was preparing for an exam. I finished this morning.”

“I’m a student too, and I just finished a professional course today, the principle of computer composition. Does our girl know it?” – Otaku Boy

“I have no idea, sounds hard though.”

“Haha, since right now, I’m the only viewer, show your face! Just tilt the camera up a little, please? Pleaseee?” – Otaku Boy

Chapter 14: The End of the Year Exam

After dropping the packages at Liu Man’s house, Yu Zhan said to her, “Now, you’ll need to handle the rest by yourself.”

Liu Man wasn’t planning on inviting him into her house either, “Thank you.”

Yu Zhan laughed, “Just how many times did you say thanks to me in one day.”

He snapped his fingers to the alaskan, “Paul, let’s go.”

Paul barked and walked up to him. His four paws were very graceful. They gently stepped on the floor tiles. You couldn’t even hear a stepping sound in the empty hallway.

“Oh yeah, for your cat food, I’ll have to transfer some more into the shop. Is Monday alright for you to pick it up?”

Liu Man knew that Daylight’s cat food was enough to support her for 2 days, “Sure, but I have a test on Monday, so I’ll pick up the cat food in the night.”

“What are you testing?” Yu Zhan asked.

“Piano, I’m a pianist, ” Liu Man didn’t lie to him. She felt comfortable around him, so he really couldn’t be a terrible person.

Yu Zhan was surprised, “Pianist? That explains.”

“Explains what?”

Yu Zhan smiled but didn’t say anything. He walked to the elevator and said to Liu Man,

“Good luck on your test for Monday.”

“Lend me your luck.”

Just as Liu Man had finished unpacking her packages, Zhang Pei came back home.

“Manman, I saw your dad today.”

“How is he?” Liu Man hurried out of her bedroom.

“He got skinnier, but still is in good health. He said for us not to worry about him. The environment in the detention center wasn’t as bad as we thought.”

In Liu Man’s memories, her father loved Liu Man very, very much. He would even pick the stars from the skies to give it to her if it were possible.

“I had to leave when we had only spoken a few sentences. This is considering the fact that we relied on the connections of your Uncle Sun,” Zhang Pei said, “Right now, I have the driving recorder and the surveillance camera footage. You could see that the delivery guy had bumped onto the car himself. Your dad had stepped on the brake, too.”

“But dad drank.”

“Exactly, the drinking ruins things,” Zhang Pei was both furious and helpless with her husband, “One sip of wine costed one life, which is 3 million.”

“Is the 3 million confirmed?”

“Yiyi and their lawyer wanted to meet the Wang family again next week. To see if they could rearrange again.” Zhang Pei said. She knew that the chances were low, but for the future of her daughter, she had to collect that 3 million. Zhang Pei planned to borrow from her family and go to work herself.

TL Note: Remember how Liu Man’s mom is a full-time housewife and didn’t work at all? Also, Yiyi is Sun Yiyi, otherwise known as Uncle Sun. Uwu

Zhang Pei walked up to Liu Man, patted her head, “You must work hard, graduate successfully and make us proud, ah.”

TL Note: The “ah” is like a sigh.

Zhang Pei’s sigh made Liu Man’s heart feel as if it had been pushed down by a boulder. She lifted her hands and held her mother’s skinny hands tightly.

Liu Man was already thankful that God had given her another chance to live. So what if her family had huge debt? She was willing to replace the old Liu Man and help with the debt herself. Like she was making it up for the old Liu Man for taking her body.

Monday, 8:30 am, piano room.

Liu Man’s class were assigned to piano room number 2. No one dared to be late, and everyone had arrived 10 minutes early to the testing room. The 3 proctors were already sitting inside, and everyone was sitting on their seats.

These kinds of tests were a piece of cake for the good students, like Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina. They felt confident and there was no pressure for them, but they worried for Liu Man, as they knew her level.

Li Xiaoru said, “Don’t worry about anything, just focus on hitting all the notes correctly, and then surely, the teacher won’t give you a bad grade.”

Wang Nina nodded her head, “The teachers won’t normally purposely give students a bad grade. The last time, the reason they didn’t let you pass was because you stopped too many times during the exam. Just look at how long you’ve been practicing, I think you’ll be fine.”

“The first thing is, don’t ever be nervous. I think you get nervous very easily.”=

Liu Man’s psychological quality was indeed quite a mess. She couldn’t preform in front of a large audience. Whenever people gathered to watch, she would become a nervous reck. In the entrance exam, if Tang Tu hadn’t been there as a “mental support” for her, she wouldn’t never slipped by the mark.

Liu Man also didn’t know what to expect of her scores. She was indeed very nervous.

Her Guqin skills had been taught by Madam Qu, and most of the times, her audience was only consisted of just Little Zhao and Madam Qu. On some occasions, other abandoned madams in the cold palace would follow the sound of the music and take a peek. They all said, so what if the music was the sound of an angel, it would only be played for these ignored madams like themselves anyway.

Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina played before Liu Man. When it was time for Liu Man’s turn, she heard her classmates say,

“We’ll have Liu Man at the bottom anyway. We’re fine, we’re fine, there’s no need to worry.”

“Haha, our school wouldn’t expel the last place.”

“At least it wouldn’t be so embarrassing.”

This, ladies and gentlemen, was how Liu Man’s classmates saw her.

Walking into the classroom, Liu Man first introduced herself to the three teachers. Among these three teachers, she knew two. One was the associate professor of the piano Major, one was her music theory teacher, and one was a middle aged lady who had beautiful makeup, in which Liu Man had never seen before.

When the associate professor and the music theory teacher saw Liu Man, they immediately gave her a low grade in their minds. Who didn’t know that Liu Man from the piano major? The prettiest girl in the grade, yet a classical flower vase.

“I am going to perform the piece, Butterfly, by Grieg.”

This was a fairly easy song for the piano majored kids, and the teachers weren’t expecting anything. Because they had listened to dozens of piano songs before Liu Man’s performance, they were a bit tired too.

The associate professor lightly said, “You can start now.”

Liu Man sat in front of the piano, put the music sheets she brought on the piano. She looked at the keyboard and was actually nervous. After a deep breath, she softly put her hands on the keys.

The melody that rang in the teacher’s ears a hundred times before came. Obviously, there was nothing too particular about her playing.

They quickly wrote some comments and a low score on her sheet, desperately wanting to end this session, so that the next student could come in.

But the middle aged woman quietly said to the other two, “Listen closely, this girl’s pretty interesting.”

Butterfly, just like its name, is a very romantic piece. Excellent musicians can make the listeners feel as if they’ve heard sunlight and beautiful butterflies dancing in the flower field from the rhythm.

After the convincing of the middle aged woman, the two teachers sat down and listened carefully. Liu Man’s piano skills were bad, alright, and her fingers had no skill or technique. Yet every note, every beat, was precisely played. No mistakes at all. Liu Man was like a wise man, persevering through her piece.

She was like a butterfly without its glamorous looks, working hard to keep going, yet not stopping to look back.

The teachers knew Liu Man’s average score. To achieve this level, they knew that Liu Man must’ve worked hard and practiced countless of times.

So they crossed out the low score and negative comments on her paper.

After finally finishing the piece, Liu Man bowed and thanked the teachers. While she was leaving the classroom, the middle aged women called out to her,

“Ms. Man, please wait a moment.”

Chapter 13: Buying Cat Food Again

Hi. We’re back from a long hiatus.

No, we did not drop this translation. Multiple of our translators had become really ill (and allergic), so we had to take a break. Once again, I repeat, we have not dropped this, so we’ll begin translating regularly soon. School’s almost over for us, so we’re sure that we’ll be able to get quite an amount of translations out through the summer! 😀

TLDR: We didn’t drop this, to some of you who thought we had. Many of our translators were sick. So, sorry for the inconveniences we caused before! 🙂

Liu Man felt very weak, “I want to apply for a refund.”

“Sorry dear, but we don’t accept opened cat food. I’m very sorry.”

“Your cat food has problems, why won’t you let me refund it then?” Liu Man was getting mad. Cats cost lots of money to raise, and this store’s cat food was expensive. 15 pounds of cat food, the whole bag, costs more than 500 yuan. She didn’t dare to use this to feed Daylight, but the money couldn’t be wasted.

TL Note: Didn’t dare to feed Daylight because it was fake.

Her family was in need of money, so she couldn’t spend money without care like the old Liu Man did anymore.

“If you don’t give me a refund, then I’ll give your store a bad review. Because of your cat food, my cat had hematochezia last night!”

Li Xiaoru once told her, Taobao store owners feared bad reviews the most. Liu Man thought this trick would work, but didn’t expect that the opposite side didn’t care, “You can give us a bad review, but they don’t matter. Our product doesn’t have a problem,” The customer service didn’t call Liu Man “dear” anymore, and said with a cold voice, “Hematochezia can be caused by many things, do you have any proof that it’s our cat foods’ problem?”

No matter what message Liu Man sent after, customer service just wouldn’t reply back. She searched for a long time on the ordering page, and finally found a button to apply for a Taobao shop Xiaoer intervention. It stated that the process would be completed within seven working days.

But what would Daylight eat during the seven days?

Liu Man thought of Yu Zhan and immediately opened WeChat.

“Do you sell cat food from the brand, Cats’ Garden, in your store?”

After the message was sent, she realized it was 8am, and that she shouldn’t be bothering him so early in the morning.

But after a few seconds, Liu Man got a reply.

“Yes.”

“I want to buy a few bags of cat food from your store.”

“Alright.”

“Manman, are you awake?” Zhang Pei’s voice came from outside.

“Yeah, I’m awake.”

Liu Man dropped her phone and opened the door.

“Me and your Uncle Sun have to meet up to talk about your father, so you’ll have to make your own meal today.”

“Okay,” Liu Man hesitated and asked, “How long is dad going to be kept by the police?”

Zhang Pei sighed, “That depends on how long the procedure of the procuratorate takes, we need to try to reach an agreement with the Wang family as fast as possible.”

During this time, Sun Yiyi contacted the opposing lawyer, and as he expected, Lawyer Zhang implied that the Wang family’s youngest son got angry a lot. He especially liked posting community tabs on the internet. It wasn’t good for both sides of the party if the delay continued.

The Wang family wouldn’t let loose on the 3 million, not even a single bit. But on the other hand, if they paid the Wangs 3 millions and won their forgiveness, then Liu Chengyu could definitely come home in less than a year. Otherwise, 3~5 years of jail time awaited ahead.

Zhang Pei was going to let her husband go to jail. She didn’t care if he lost his job. He needed to be responsible for his own mistakes. They could always just start all over again.

But Sun Yiyi said that once Liu Chengyu got into jail, then that would become the permanent stain on Liu Man’s record. She wouldn’t be able to become a civil servant or even pass the civil service exam.

Zhang Pei couldn’t accept that. She always thought being a civil servant was the best job her useless daughter could get! As a mother, she had to think for Liu Man’s future.

Zhang Pei took her bag and left the house. Liu Man kept herself busy too. She first cleaned the house, then started practicing piano.

The final exam was next Monday, and Liu Man had to use her weekend time to practice. From the start of the practice to the end was a whole entire day. She had only rested a bit while eating lunch. If it weren’t for the delivery call, she would’ve still been practicing.

Her compound didn’t let deliveries in. Some delivery men would put the packages in the storage room, while some would pick a time when the house owner was home and let them come to pick it up.

The delivery man piled her packages at the side. It was a total of five boxes. Liu Man had just finished signing the receipt and thinking of how she could carry those home by herself.

A voice suddenly spoke from behind her,

“Why are you dozing off here?”

Liu Man turned around, surprised to see Yu Zhan here. The weather was nice today, the temperature wasn’t too low, and Yu Zhan wore a long light gray coat. A long, slender body, with his hand holding a leash with an alaskan dog. The alaskan was slightly bigger than normal ones, looking very majestic. With his owner so handsome, the duo attracted everyone’s attention there.

“I was thinking about which box I should take home first.”

Yu Zhan was enlightened by how honest Liu Man was, “Let me help you.”

But Liu Man shook her head, “No thanks.” She didn’t want to cause anymore trouble for him.

“It’s really nothing, I’ll just see this as an exercise. Here, help me hold the dog.” Yu Zhan wouldn’t even give Liu Man a chance to refuse and stuffed his dog leash into her hand.

He looked at Liu Man’s house address, ordered the boxes from large to small, easily lifted the pile up, and quickly walked towards Liu Man’s compound.

Liu Man wanted to stop him, but was dragged forward by the alaskan dog and had to jog to keep up. She caught up with Yu Zhan, leaving numerous stunned people behind. Before, people thought that Tang Tu and his girlfriend both had god-like faces, but right now, everyone thought that Yu Zhan and Liu Man were the real gods of beauty because they weren’t even wearing makeup!

“But the boxes are covered with dust. Your clothes are going to get dirty,” Liu Man was worried.

“I can just wash it, it’s not worth much after-all.”

Yu Zhan’s tone was indifferent, and Liu Man believed him.

“What did you buy?” Yu Zhan asked.

“Stationery. Pens and stuff.”

“Are they ballpoint pens, gel pens or what? How much did you even buy? It’s pretty heavy.”

Yu Zhan first thought of paint pens, color pencils and other colorful notebooks that little girls liked.

“No, I bought the MengTian brush.”

“What?” Yu Zhan didn’t understand.

“It’s commonly known as the Chinese writing brush. I also got paper and an ink slab.”

“So you meant Chinese calligraphy.”

“Yep.”

Yu Zhan was surprised, but he expected it somehow. The first impression Liu Man gave to him was that she was different from other girls he had met before.

Her eyes didn’t look like a teenager’s eyes. They weren’t arrogant and self centered eyes. They had a bit of implicit hold and generosity, yet still, they shined. So even though she only wore her sleepwear under the jacket, with a messy look, she still gave off a very ladylike vibe.

Liu Man didn’t want to say much. It wasn’t her fault that she had bought those brushes to earn money. Just like what Wang Nina told her, vulgar and not elegant enough.

TL Note: Because Wang Nina thinks that piano students must be elegant enough, she didn’t think that Liu Man was elegant enough because she cared about money so much.

The alaskan dog was very intelligent. Knowing that his owner was flirting, he walked steadily, not giving his owner trouble. His tail was wagging, and his big black eyes were constantly moving.

Liu Man was curious about the dog and asked Yu Zhan, “Is this your dog?”

“Yeah, his name is Paul, I found him two years earlier.”

“How could someone throw away a dog so cute,” Liu Man loved animals even in her previous life. Now that she had Daylight, she couldn’t bear to see animal abuse even more.

“I found him in my apartment’s staircase. He was in a box, trembling from the cold. He looked pitiful.”

Liu Man could even imagine the scene, she felt a bit sad. “Thank God, Paul met you. This was to his luck.”

Yu Zhan laughed and said, “Yep, meeting me normally brings good luck.”

Back from hiatus!

Hi, all!

Yes, our team has decided to come back from our hiatus. At first, the hiatus had only been planned for around two weeks. Distance learning had started for our school, there was so much homework. Basically, everything was a mess.

Then, two of our and practically our only translators had become very ill. But luckily, they’re both fine now.

So, we’re coming back from our hiatus! Just so you know, we have not dropped any of our novels. We’re working hard at translating both of them. Particularly, Transmigration of the Famous Cyber Star will have a few chapters rolling out soon. (we know you guys like that one a lot!)

So, TLDR: We’re back from our hiatus. And no, we haven’t dropped ANY of our novels. 🙂
